Bible Verses About Forgiveness

Receiving and extending forgiveness

Forgiveness is one of the most transformative truths in Scripture—God freely forgives us, and He calls us to extend that same forgiveness to others. Through Christ's sacrifice, we receive complete forgiveness for all our sins, and this incredible grace empowers us to forgive those who have wronged us.

What the Bible Says About Forgiveness

The foundation of forgiveness is found in the cross of Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:13-14 tells us that God forgave all our sins, canceling the written code that stood against us. This wasn't cheap forgiveness—it cost Jesus His life. Understanding the price God paid to forgive us transforms how we view forgiving others.

Jesus made forgiveness central to His teaching, emphasizing that our willingness to forgive others is directly connected to experiencing God's forgiveness. In the Lord's Prayer, He taught us to pray, "Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors" (Matthew 6:12). He later explained that if we don't forgive others, our heavenly Father will not forgive us (Matthew 6:14-15).

Forgiveness doesn't mean excusing sin or pretending we weren't hurt. Rather, it's a choice to release the debt someone owes us, trusting God to be the ultimate judge. Paul instructs us to "bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you" (Colossians 3:13). The standard is clear: we forgive others the way Christ forgave us—completely and unconditionally.

The parable of the unmerciful servant (Matthew 18:21-35) powerfully illustrates this principle. A servant who was forgiven a massive debt refused to forgive a small debt owed to him. Jesus uses this story to show that those who have received God's immeasurable forgiveness should freely extend forgiveness to others. Holding onto unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die—it only harms us and blocks our fellowship with God.

Key Verses on Forgiveness

Ephesians 4:32

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

Paul connects our forgiveness of others directly to the forgiveness we've received from God. The motivation for forgiving isn't found in whether someone deserves it, but in recognizing how much we've been forgiven. Christ's forgiveness of us becomes both our example and our empowerment to forgive others.

1 John 1:9

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

This verse assures us that God's forgiveness is available whenever we genuinely confess our sins. God is both faithful to His promise to forgive and just because Christ paid the penalty for our sins. This forgiveness isn't partial—it includes purification from all unrighteousness.

Matthew 6:14-15

"For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

Jesus establishes a sobering connection between forgiving others and receiving God's forgiveness. This isn't salvation by works, but rather shows that unforgiveness reveals a heart that hasn't truly grasped God's grace. A forgiven person becomes a forgiving person.

Colossians 3:13

"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

Paul instructs believers to forgive in the same manner that God forgave them—completely, unconditionally, and without holding grudges. The phrase 'bear with each other' acknowledges that people will hurt us, but we're called to extend patience and forgiveness rather than retaliation or bitterness.

Psalm 103:12

"As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."

This beautiful imagery describes the completeness of God's forgiveness. East and west never meet—they're infinitely separated. This is how far God removes our sins from us when He forgives. He doesn't hold our past against us or keep bringing up forgiven sins.

Luke 23:34

"Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.' And they divided up his clothes by casting lots."

Even while being crucified, Jesus models the ultimate act of forgiveness. He prays for those who are killing Him, showing that forgiveness isn't dependent on someone asking for it or deserving it. This sets the standard for how we should forgive even in the most painful circumstances.

Practical Application

  • 1

Make a list of people you need to forgive and pray specifically for each person, asking God to help you release any bitterness or resentment you're holding.

  • 2

When someone hurts you, practice immediate forgiveness rather than letting offenses build up, following Jesus's instruction to forgive 'seventy times seven.'

  • 3

Reflect daily on the forgiveness you've received from God, allowing gratitude for His grace to soften your heart toward those who've wronged you.

  • 4

If you've hurt someone, take the initiative to ask for forgiveness, making amends where possible and seeking reconciliation.

  • 5

Remember that forgiveness is a process—if painful memories resurface, choose again to forgive and trust God to heal your heart over time.
