Following God's commands

Obedience to God is the practical expression of our love and trust in Him. The Bible teaches that true faith manifests in obedience to God's Word and commands. While we're not saved by obedience, genuine salvation produces a desire to please God through faithful obedience. Blessing and intimacy with God flow from walking in His ways.

What the Bible Says About Obedience

Jesus directly connects love and obedience: "If you love me, keep my commands" (John 14:15). Obedience isn't legalistic duty but loving response to God's grace. Later He adds, "Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me" (John 14:21). We demonstrate the genuineness of our love for God through our willingness to obey Him, even when it's difficult or costly.

Obedience brings blessing. Deuteronomy 28 outlines extensive blessings for Israel if they obeyed God's commands. While we're under the new covenant, the principle remains: obedience positions us to experience God's favor and blessing. Jesus said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it" (Luke 11:28). Disobedience, conversely, brings consequences and separates us from experiencing God's best.

True obedience goes beyond external compliance to internal transformation. God desires obedience from the heart, not just outward conformity. The Pharisees scrupulously kept religious rules while their hearts were far from God, and Jesus rebuked them for it. God wants us to obey not from fear of punishment or desire for reward, but from hearts transformed by His love and filled with desire to please Him.

Samuel declared, "To obey is better than sacrifice" (1 Samuel 15:22), rebuking King Saul for partial obedience. God values obedience over religious performance. We can't substitute spiritual activities for simple obedience to what God has already commanded. James emphasizes this: "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says" (James 1:22). Hearing without doing is self-deception; true faith manifests in obedient action.

Key Verses on Obedience

John 14:15

"If you love me, keep my commands."

Jesus establishes obedience as the proof of love. It's easy to claim we love God, but true love is demonstrated through keeping His commands. Obedience isn't burdensome duty but the natural overflow of genuine love for Christ.

James 1:22

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

James warns against self-deception—thinking that hearing God's Word is enough. True faith responds to God's Word with obedience. We must be doers, not just hearers. Knowledge without application leads to spiritual stagnation and self-deception.

1 Samuel 15:22

"But Samuel replied: 'Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.'"

Samuel rebukes Saul for incomplete obedience, establishing that God values obedience over religious rituals. We can't substitute spiritual activities or generous giving for simple obedience to what God has commanded. Partial obedience is disobedience.

John 14:23-24

"Jesus replied, 'Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.'"

Jesus promises that obedience leads to intimate fellowship with God—the Father and Son making their home with us. Conversely, disobedience reveals absence of love for Christ. Obedience opens the door to deeper communion with God.

Deuteronomy 28:1-2

"If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God."

God promises blessings that accompany obedience. While we can't earn God's love through obedience, obedience positions us to experience His favor and blessing. Disobedience, conversely, moves us out from under God's protection and provision.

Luke 11:28

"He replied, 'Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.'"

Jesus pronounces blessing on those who both hear and obey God's Word. Hearing alone is insufficient; blessing comes through obedience. This challenges us to move beyond passive learning to active application of Scripture.

Practical Application

  • 1

Identify one area where you know God's will but have been slow to obey, and take a step of obedience this week, trusting God with the outcome.

  • 2

Develop a habit of immediately obeying promptings from the Holy Spirit rather than delaying or rationalizing why you can't obey right now.

  • 3

Study Jesus's teachings in the Gospels and ask yourself honestly, 'Am I obeying this?' about each command you read.

  • 4

When tempted to disobey, remember that obedience is how you demonstrate love for God and position yourself for blessing.

  • 5

Surround yourself with believers who will encourage obedience and lovingly call out areas where you're compromising or rationalizing disobedience.
