Book Context

Matthew 5-7 contains the Sermon on the Mount. After the Beatitudes and salt metaphor, Jesus calls His followers to be visible witnesses in the world.

Historical Background

First-century Palestine, where cities on hills were visible for miles and oil lamps were the only source of artificial light. Jesus uses familiar imagery to teach about influence and witness.

"You are the light of the world"

Present tense declaration—believers already ARE light, not will become. Jesus is the ultimate Light (John 8:12); we reflect His light. 'World' shows our influence extends beyond the church to all people.

"A town built on a hill cannot be hidden"

Cities on hills were visible day and night, impossible to conceal. Christians' lives should be conspicuous, not secret. Our faith affects how we live publicly, making us naturally visible.

"Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl"

It's absurd to light a lamp and hide it—that defeats its purpose. Similarly, hiding our faith defeats the purpose of having it. We're meant to illuminate, not conceal our relationship with Christ.

"let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven"

Intentionally live so others see Christ in you. 'Good deeds' aren't for self-glory but to point to God. When people see transformed lives, they praise God, not us. Our witness should attract others to the Father.
