Genesis 2:24 establishes God's design for marriage: "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh." Marriage involves leaving previous family attachments, cleaving to one's spouse in covenant commitment, and experiencing profound unity—one flesh. This divine design precedes the fall and reflects God's perfect plan for human relationships.

Ephesians 5:22-33 provides extensive teaching on marriage, comparing it to Christ and the church. Wives are called to respect and submit to their husbands as the church submits to Christ. Husbands are called to love their wives sacrificially as Christ loved the church, giving Himself up for her.
